Student killed on solo cross country – Coventry to Staverton

I always keep this accident in the back of my mind when briefing solo students, It’s also why I select low density traffic cross countries, unlike other local flying schools I have come across who give little thought to such matters. It should act as a reminder to us all that it is essential to keep a good lookout at all times and that positioning over a disused airfield may bring us into close contact with other aircraft. Route selection can help by avoiding areas of high traffic density especially when alternative routes can be taken.

One can imagine on approaching this checkpoint the pilot may have been more concerned about track accuracy, map reading and identification rather than LOOKOUT, a mistake that most likely cost him his life. You cannot spend enough time keeping a watchful eye for other aircraft, don’t let distraction reduce your lookout.

  1. The lookout is absolutely vital and one does forget whilst navigating, FREDA checking, radio operating etc. But it is so vital and needs to become an absolutely habitual part of flying. I shall be working on it. I like the safety sense leaflet says that if carrying passengers, you should brief them to keep a lookout too and to say if there’s something amiss.
